This
dwarf rasbora becomes only about 3 cm long. The species is new in our stock list. The scientific description of the fish was under the name of
Rasbora spilocerca, but nowadays it is placed in the monotypic (this means the genus contains only one species)
genus Rasbosoma. The natural distribution of the charming fish is the lower Mekonh basin of Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. Before its scientific description in 1987 it was always thought to represent
juveniles of Rasora trilineata, the scissortail rasbora.
Rasbosoma spilocerca is an ideal fish for nano tanks. We suggest the common name dwarf scissortail rasbora for it. The species is completely undemanding regarding the water chemistry (hardness, pH) and can be kept and even bred in any type of tap water. Ideal water for breeding has proofed pH 7 and GH 4°dH. The water temperature can be between 22 and 28°C. Scissortail rasbora or R. spilocerca are marked as least concern but are listed on the
IUCN Red List of Endangered Species for habitat degradation from wetland reclamation and pollution are potential threats to this species.
