Peacock cichlid species list including pictures and fish for sale
Peacock cichlids are one of the most popular and easily recognizable cichlids in the hobby and trade today. Refer to the handy Peacock cichlid species list below for reference information. At any rate not all peacock cichlids are equal or the same. Did you know there are two cichlid fish referred to as peacocks?
There are the African cichlid peacocks belonging to the genus Aulonocara with some twenty two recognized species in addition to species not yet named formerly. Their beautiful colors have made them extremely desirable and will inline breeding there are so many strains or varieties of these fish in dazzling colors to choose from like the Strawberry Peacock cichlids.
The other peacock cichlid in the hobby is the ever monstrous South American cichlid peacock commonly called Peacock Bass or peacock bass cichlid, which belong to the genus Cichla. These fish can reach some thirty inches in length in the wild. Now these large cichlids are popular among two communities, cichlid hobbyists who fancy big fish like the wolf cichlid called Nandopsis dovii and sport fisherman who indulge in what’s called sport fishing.
In general the Aulonocara peacocks are endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. These cichlids are known as maternal mouth brooders that reach around six inches in length. They are beautiful fish and perfect for creating active African cichlid community tanks with a ratio of one male to three to four females.
Prices for these fish range from average to very expensive this can be a result of the inline varieties, the ones created from crossing fish. The other reason is that thirteen or so varieties of Aulonocara are listed on the IUCN Red List of endangered species which will surely drive the price up if their available for sale on the market. In comparison the species of Cichla or the peacock bass cichlids are endemic to South America.
These cichlids are known to be probably one of the largest fish kept in the aquarium accept for the Giant Cichlid known as Boulengerochromis microlepis.
